Peugeot RCZ

Peugeot RCZ
The Peugeot RCZ sports car will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany in September 2009. The Peugeot RCZ was first revealed as a concept car in 2007. The first production model houses some really advanced technology. The Peugeot RCZ is fitted with an active rear spoiler, twin-scroll turbo charger, direct petrol injection, variable valve lift and variable valve timing, Hill Assist to help with maneuvers on steep gradients, an intelligent traction control system or ASR, an electronic brake force distribution or EBFD and emergency brake assist or EBA.

It’s the first car to be revealed by Peugeot which doesn’t use the usual zero numbering system, which means that Peugeot considers this to be a special vehicle. A hybrid version of the Peugeot RCZ will also be presented as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. The hybrid is rumored to be able to do 100 km on 3.7 litres of fuel, which would make it the most fuel efficient sports car if it were available today. The Peugeot RCZ will go on sale to the public in 2010.

Peugeot SR1 Concept hints at next 407

Peugeot SR1
This is the Peugeot SR1, a concept model for 2010 Geneva Motor Show which is a showcase of the French firm’s future models. The SR1 shows a radical change in Peugeot’s design language, which has traded its savage feline style for a more tender, smoother, classier shape. This we think is really good! The next generation of Peugeot 407, which will be called either 408 or 508, will be the first car to feature this new style.

The SR1 itself is a convertible Grand Tourer which is 4.8 meters long, 1.9 meters wide and 1.2 meters tall, and features carbon fiber body, 20-inch wheels. Every single panel in this car is new and amazing and honestly if it wasn’t for the badge (which by the way is new!) you couldn’t tell it’s a Peugeot!

Peugeot 5008 will Benefit from a raised Driving Position

2010 Peugeot 5008
The driver of the Peugeot 5008 will benefit from a raised driving position which gives excellent visibility, combined with ergonomically positioned controls. With its large front windscreen (1.70m²) and the large panoramic glass roof (1.69m²), passengers will benefit from a bright interior with an exceptional panoramic view of the outside. Adding the side windows, the rear quarter panel windows and the rear windscreen, the glazed surface area totals 5.77m².

All three seats in the second row are identical and can be reclined and moved forwards and backwards over a distance of 130mm. They can also be folded individually into the passenger compartment floor to form a flat surface perfectly aligned with the rear loading sill. The front passenger seat can also be folded flat into a shelf configuration, it is therefore possible to load long objects as far as the fascia panel. The effective load length in this configuration (all seats folded away and the front passenger seat folded flat in the shelf position) is 2.76m.

Frankfurt 09: Peugeot BB1, shorter than a Smart Fortwo

Peugoet BB1 electric concept
Peugoet BB1 electric concept. It's always encouraging when car makers think outside the box, fettling ideas into forms that make us all sit back and think about the future. The award for trying hardest at this year's Frankfurt motor show has to go to French maker Peugeot and its BB1 micro-car.

Similar to the design strategy employed for other light cars already on sale, the BB1 has four wheels pushed right to each corner. The body consists of an upright box, but it is how Peugeot has packaged it that makes all the difference.

It's an electric car. And it seats four people in a body that measures just 2.5 metres long, making it shorter than a two-seater Smart Fortwo. And then there's that pug-nosed look. A sharply rising shoulder line runs from front to rear, while the windscreen, inset on its lower edge, wraps around above the front seats and splits to form two bubbles that provide head room for rear seat passengers.

Underneath, the BB1 is a motorcycle-inspired tubular space frame. That's then clad in a lightweight carbon fibre shell. Solar panels formed into the roof help recharge the BB1's batteries, as well as running the air-conditioning system while the car is parked so that it's not too hot, or cold, once the driver returns. The two rear seats are more like those you'd find on a motorbike than the classic rear pew you'd expect in a conventional car. The car's banks of lithium-ion batteries are stored beneath them.

To access the rear, Peugeot's designers have done away with the complications of a front seat that has to tilt and slide forward, building a seatback that folds flat into the front seat. There's no steering wheel, either. Instead, there's a motorcycle-like set of handlebars similar to a three-wheeled tuk-tuk motorcycle taxi. Driving the rear wheels are two electric motors housed inside the wheel hubs. Each produces 10kW of power and 320Nm of torque, enough to move the BB1 from 0-30km/h in 2.8 seconds. Top speed is 90km/h, while range is set at 120km.

The lightweight design means the BB1 only tips the scale at 600kg. A significant part of the weight, though, is the batteries, which alone account for 100kg. Peugeot chief executive Philippe Varin said it was the right moment for the car maker to "build a bridge between the past and the future". "We have to show that we are a responsible leader in environmental technology," he said. Mr Varin said part of the car maker's strategy was Hybrid4, a diesel-electric drivetrain that would reduce vehicle carbon dioxide emissions across a range of Peugeot models to below 100 grams per kilometre.

Peugeot BB1... Cleverer Than Smart?

Peugeot BB1
French manufacturer uses the Frankfurt motor show to unveil its vision for the inner-city commuter of the future. This year's Frankfurt motor show is graced by a horde of eco-friendly commuters (no surprises there), and one of the more offbeat contenders is Peugeot's radically styled BB1. The miniscule box on wheels measures just 2.5m in length (about 200mm shorter than a current-generation smart fortwo), yet it's able to accommodate four occupants.

The zero-emission, electric-powered vehicle has a range of 120km and Peugeot claims it "reinvents the automobile in every way". There's more than an element of hype in this boast, but the BB1 does nonetheless pioneer some clever tech. Its maker says the design brief for the BB1 was to meet the mobility needs of everyday individuals on a daily basis and provide maximum versatility, a compact size, manoeuvrability (3.5m turning circle) and good performance levels.

Fitting four people in a car that measures just 2.5m long is no mean feat, and Peugeot is billing the achievement as a world-first. The company says it harnessed maximum packaging efficiency by conceiving a passenger compartment that draws inspiration from two-wheeled vehicles in terms of its ergonomics and controls.

The driver controls the vehicle by adopting a novel driving position -- more vertical than is usual. This is made possible largely through the absence of foot pedals, as in a conventional car. There's a scooter-like handlebar (with throttle and brake controls) where you'd normally find a steering wheel.

Access to the vehicle is through the reverse-opening doors, while the load area access is through an innovative tail-board/tailgate design. The interior can be transformed as required to offer a load volume of up to 160 litres (with four occupants), or 855 litres (with just one person in the car). The funky exterior design makes use of full-LED headlights and rear-view cameras that negate the need for mirrors. The 'double bubble roof', similar to the RCZ, is said to create a feeling of spaciousness within the cabin, and large side windows help in this regard.

Propulsion comes from two electric motors mounted in the rear wheels, designed in association with Michelin. A pair of lithium-ion battery packs is housed under the rear seats, providing a touring range of 120km. The electric motors produce 15kW, enabling the BB1 to accelerate from 0-30km/h in 2.8sec, and in-gear acceleration is also respectable (Peugeot claims it dispatches the 30-60km/h increment in 4 seconds). The body is made up of a very light carbonfibre structure that can be configured in a number of shapes, and it contributes to an all-up weight of under 600kg.

Further efficiency gains come from solar panels that provide a yield of around 16 per cent of energy captured (claimed to be much higher than current systems) to power some of the vehicle's systems (such as the ventilation system). Check out the Carsales Network's Frankfurt show preview and brand-by-brand summaries. And stay tuned for more Frankfurt show news and first drives in the days to come.
